This mapping interface provides a viewer of the results from the journal article entitled: "Assessing global river connectivity to map the worlds remaining free-flowing rivers" (Grill et al. 2018, under review). The site provides a zoomable map interface for visualizing the three main data layers developed and analyzed in the manuscript. Further extensive documentation on these layers are provided in the manuscript and here (link to methods section of website).
Notes on Using the Site
This dialogue is shown once when the website is initialized, and can be shown again using the "info" button.
The layer panel in the right side of the screen provides options for viewing the data. In the layers (include icon instead) section, the user can visualize three results layers, including "Connectivity Status Index" (CSI), "Dominant Pressure Factor", and "Free-flowing River Status". In addition, by clicking on Add or Change Layers the user can toggle on or off other layers that provide additional information and context. The data sources and copyright information for these layers appear in the Disclaimer.
In the Search section, the user is able to search for specific rivers.
In the Highlights section (include icon instead), the user can enter the story version of the tool, which highlights specific issues and stories related to free-flowing rivers around the world.
The level of zooming is currently restricted to the level 7, which corresponds to a scale of approximately 1:4 Million- [Can we add the scale? I think it is much closer now.]
The data provided on this site is for informational and review purposes only. Due to the limitations in global data (e.g., lack of comprehensive coverage of small dam locations) used in this analysis, the results may present an overestimate of the extent of free-flowing rivers. Additionally, the rivers portrayed do not distinguish between seasonal or intermittent rivers and those that flow year-round. Full details on the underlying data and methods are available in the journal article, Grill et al. 2018, Assessing global river connectivity to map the worlds remaining free-flowing rivers.
